Powder Injection Molding (PIM)

PIM - powder injection molding - stands for the injection molding process used to manufacture metallic (MIM) or ceramic (CIM) parts.

Main characteristics and know-how:

  • cost-efficient manufacturing for:

    • complex and highly integrated parts
    • high output volume
    • high quality level assurance
    • fully automated production process

Together with highly skilled partners, Battenfeld offers a complete PIM molding package, including machinery and test runs.

Powder injection molding is a multi-stage process:

  • compounding of feedstock from powder and binder system with a maximum powder content of approx. 60 % by volume
  • molding of the so called "green parts"
  • thermal or chemical-catalytic removal of the binder system for the "brown parts"
  • sintering of "brown parts" to get the final product (12 % to 20 % shrinkage occurs)

Battenfeld offers two different machine configurations to start PIM processing:
PIMbasic and PIMadvanced

Components:

  • special wear resistant screws and barrels adapted to the powder used
  • special screw geometries
  • temperature controlled feed throat
  • special hopper
  • tailored automation solutions (option)
