Liquid Injection Molding (LIM)

LIM is the injection molding process used to manufacture elastic parts made of two component liquid silicon rubber (LSR-Liquid Silicon Rubber).

Major properties:

  • curing because of addition crosslinking
  • advantageous behaviour when burned - no toxic by-products
  • high thermal stability up to 180° C
  • resistant to temperatures as low as -40° C retaining elasticity
  • very resistant to aging and weathering
  • excellent electrical and physiological properties
  • can be sterilized

Process description LIM:

  • the two components are pumped to a mixing station via a multicomponent dosing unit
  • injection into the heated mold

Major applications:

  • seals/o-rings for automotive and machinery parts
  • membranes
  • bellows for medical devices
  • isolators
  • connectors/contact pads for electric/electronics
  • stuffers
  • pacifiers

Battenfeld utilizes its modular machines with special injection units and tailored automation equipment for processing LSR products.

Main components and know-how:

  • LIM injection unit with screw, non-return valve, liquid-cooled barrel, etc. for reproducible cycles
  • vacuum package with vacuum pump, vacuum valve and pressure sensors to avoid trapped air in the mold (option)
  • ejection via brushing device and/or handling system activated by the machine controller
  • cooperation with leading peripheral equipment manufacturers and mold makers
